Dornink, a local shop located at 518 E. Grand Avenue in the East Village, is all about high fashion, unique jewelry, custom design and expert alterations. Sarah Dornink, the current owner of Dornink, said that she’s been a lover of all of these things since she was a little girl.
“I used to have fashion shows with my friends as a little girl,” said Dornink. “It involved lots of drapey sheets and safety pins.”
Dornink was founded 29 years ago by Sarah’s mother who began doing custom sewing for people out of her home. After attending fashion school in New York, Sarah decided to move back to Des Moines in 2005 to create a store in the East Village to give the business the visibility it needed to grow.
“There are a lot of amazing people in Des Moines who have been around the world for various periods of their lives but choose to live here,” said Dornink. “I think that’s pretty cool. It [Des Moines] still has a city feel (albeit small city), yet rush hour is only 15 minutes!”
Dornink is unique because it is a shop that designs all of their own clothing items and they sew these items in-house. This allows the customer to select a fabric and style that fits well with their body. Dornink also stands out because they are all about custom designing pieces for customers. Feel free to come into their shop with your dream dress in mind!
Personally, I enjoy Dornink’s collection of fun and unique pieces of jewelry and accessories. They have everything from handbags to hair accessories. The prices for most of the jewerly and accessories range from expensive (around $175) to reasonable ($25) and you can definitely find a few great deals on some one-of-a-kind pieces! They also have a sale section near the front window that I can’t help but take a look at each time I come into the store.
Visit Dornink during their business hours: Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Also, take a look at Dornink’s collection online to get a great idea of what the shop has to offer.
