Get Artsy at the Des Moines Arts Festival and ArtFest Midwest

If you’re an art lover in Des Moines – this weekend is your weekend! Both the Des Moines Arts Festival and ArtFest Midwest are bringing talented artists, along with their work, to Des Moines. Both shows compliment each other nicely, showcase many local artists, and are FREE to attend!

Des Moines Arts Festival (June 28-30, 2013) – Enjoy visual arts, performing arts, interactive arts, over 20 different food vendors and live music at the 2013 Des Moines Arts Festival (DMAF)! This year, the Festival will also showcase 205 artist booths, the Interrobang Film Festival and even the Iowa Craft Beer Tent (SCORE!). The Festival will be held in the Western Gateway Park in Downtown Des Moines. Festival hours are:

  • Friday, June 28 from 11:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, June 29 from 10:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. (Fireworks at 10:00 p.m.!)
  • Sunday, June 30 from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Helpful Resources: You can find maps of the Festival here (booth locations and parking), a schedule of events here and a full list of the wine, local beer and delicious bites here. I also downloaded the DMAF app (simply search “Des Moines Arts Festival” in the App Store), which might come in handy while on-the-go at the Festival.

Enjoy making your own works of art? The Festival has a new “Canvas & Corks” event this year, which looks awesome! Each session is 90-minutes of art-filled fun where you’ll create your own painted masterpiece while enjoying a complimentary glass of wine and snacks. The ticket price includes the previously mentioned vino and treats along with all paints and supplies. Bonus: once you’re done painting they will “hold” the canvas for you so you don’t have to carry it around the Des Moines Arts Festival while you shop! Purchase tickets for “Canvas & Corks” here.

ArtFestMidwestArtFest Midwest (June 29-30) – ArtFest Midwest is celebrating its 11th anniversary this year with over 220 artists (40% are from Iowa). The show will be held at the Varied Industries Building at the Iowa State Fair Grounds. Affordable art and the indoor, air conditioned exhibitor space makes this show a good one! The show also offers art workshops and an Iowa Artist demonstration area. Show times are:

  • Saturday, June 29 from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
  • Sunday, June 30 from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Want to visit both shows? You’re in luck! ArtFest Midwest has a shuttle that will run between the Fairgrounds and the Des Moines Arts Festival downtown. The shuttle rides, which take approximately 7 minutes, will run from 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. The buses will pick up art lovers every 15 minutes in front of the main north entrance to the Varied Industries Building and at 12th and Walnut in Downtown Des Moines.
