New Restaurant ‘Malo’ Coming to Historic Downtown Des Moines Firehouse

MALO.TheDishonDMTacos, enchiladas, gorditas, mojitos…another local restaurant is opening in downtown Des Moines! (Insert high-pitched squeal here.)

Paul Rottenberg of Orchestrate Hospitality and George Formaro (the masterminds behind local favorites such as Django, Centro, and Zombie Burger + Drink Lab) are pairing up to bring the next great restaurant to downtown Des Moines.

‘Malo’, the new 6,000 square-foot restaurant, will make its home in the soon-to-be-renovated downtown Des Moines firehouse a.k.a. the new Des Moines Social Club. The restaurant will extend the front of the building, feature a large outdoor patio and is anticipated to open in the spring of 2014.

From the Des Moines Social Club’s e-newsletter: “One of the things we look for when developing a restaurant concept is interesting architecture that adds to a facility’s character,” explains Paul Rottenberg, noting that Centro and Django are each located in historic structures. ‘The firehouse offers an opportunity to create something new and exciting within a historic structure that adds to the fabric of our community.”

The restaurant will focus on fun Latin fare, which includes Tex-Mex, Cuban, Mexican, and South-American dishes…and even a few Latin-themed cocktails. (I’m already drooling after looking at these photos from the Des Moines Register.)

I’d definitely chalk this up as a huge win for the Western Gateway and Des Moines!
