Four Winter Events to Kick Off the Holiday Season in Des Moines

AllSpice.TheDishonDMThis weekend is packed with holiday-themed events to celebrate the winter season in Des Moines! Nothing is better than starting the season with horse-drawn carriage rides, twinkling holiday lights and getting started on shopping lists by buying local.

Jingle in the Junction, the East Village Holiday Promenade, The Winter Farmers’ Market and the Tour de Lights are the best ways to welcome winter. All of the events are family-friendly and support local organizations and businesses within our community. Make sure you shop locally this holiday season!

Jingle in the Junction

Thursday, Nov. 21 from 5 – 9 p.m. in Historic Valley Junction

‘Tis the season, indeed, for Jingle in the Junction. Enjoy over 150,000 sparking lights, free horse-drawn carriage rides, a visit from Santa, caroling and late night shopping opportunities. Historic Valley Junction businesses will stay open until 9:00 p.m. to give shoppers a jump-start on their holiday shopping.

12th Annual Holiday Promenade

Friday, Nov. 22 from 5 – 9 p.m. in the East Village

Grab some friends (or a date!) and enjoy a night in the East Village. The Holiday Promenade showcases the local businesses, mouth-watering restaurants and twinkling holiday lights that make up the East Village. There will be free horse-drawn hay rack rides from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. starting at the corner of East 5th and Walnut. Top off the night with dinner at one of the many restaurants (I suggest Alba, The Continental or Lucca) and get a little exercise ice skating at Brenton Skating Plaza.

The Winter Farmers’ Market

Friday, Nov. 22 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 23 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Capital Square and Kaleidoscope Mall

The Winter Farmers’ Market is the perfect opportunity to stock up for the holidays – for gifts and meals. There will be over 120 vendors selling locally made, grown and raised products such as holiday hams, eggs, produce, honey, wine, salsa, cinnamon rolls and more. Holiday favorites such as poinsettias, Christmas trees, ornaments and wreaths will be for sale. The Winter Farmers’ Market will be held at Capital Square and Kaleidoscope Mall at 5th and Walnut Streets in downtown Des Moines. View directions and parking information here.

Tour de Lights – Family Night and Fitness Night

Saturday, Nov. 23  at 4:30 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 24 at 4:30 p.m. in Des Moines Water Works Park

Exercise and support the Iowa Chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation all in one event. Tour de Lights is an event where participants are invited to run, walk, skate or bike through Water Works Park while enjoying Jolly Holly Lights…before it opens to the public! Enjoy a 1.5 or 3.5 mile run/ride inside Water Works Park or try the longer trek – an 11 mile roundtrip route from El Bait Shop or Mullets to Water Works Park. Friday night is Tour de Lights Family Night and Saturday night is Tour de Lights Fitness Night. For more information, visit the Make-A-Wish calendar of events.
