Des Moines couple adopts from Nigeria, support needed from the local community

Jonny and Kayla Craig met in high school, in a theatre arts class to be exact, and they’ve been high school sweethearts ever since. They are strong believers in their Christian faith, they live in Beaverdale, and they drink a lot of coffee. Jonny and Kayla might seem like your average young professional couple in Des Moines but if you take a deeper look, you’ll quickly notice that they are a little different from most.

Jonny and Kayla knew they were called to do something, so they followed their calling. A little over a year ago Jonny and Kayla made the decision to expand their family.

“Everywhere I looked someone was blogging or tweeting about the orphan crisis,” said Kayla Craig. “I knew that the orphan crisis was something that was weighing on my heart. It was actually kind of crazy because one night Jonny told me that he’d watched a video in school about political unrest and genocide in developing countries, which made him think about all of the children in those countries. We looked at each other and we knew that God was calling us to adopt.”

Kayla and Jonny had done all of their homework about the adoption process. They’d read countless blogs, websites and searched online, but they were still a little lost in the process. After running into Eric Idehen, who founded Cornerstone of Hope Orphanage in 2006, their path became clearer. With Eric’s help, the couple began the adoption process. They completed all of the necessary paperwork and they were eventually matched with their 8-month-old son, Joseph.

Joseph was born in Benin City, which is located in southern Nigeria, Africa. Nigeria is a little more than twice the size of California and there are many children there who are in need of the basic necessities of life. In February, the Craig’s traveled to Nigeria and they were able to meet their son Joseph for the first time. They were able to feed him, change his diaper, and love him as any parents would, but leaving him behind was especially hard for the couple to do.

“The hardest part of the process was having to leave him,” said Kayla Craig. “It’s just heartbreaking leaving your son. It’s also hard knowing that you don’t have a lot of control. It’s been a good life lesson. Even if you think you have things planned out, life never works out that way.”

As you can imagine, the adoption process has been filled with a lot of paperwork, has taken nearly a year, and has become quite an expensive endeavor. When all is said and done, the Craig’s will have spent between $23,000 and $25,000 to adopt Joseph.

“Part of this process has been us learning to lay down our pride and asking others to come along side us,” said Craig. “We’ve paid the large majority of the costs already by working second jobs and saving everything, but we still need a little extra help.”

The Craig’s, along with the help of a few others, have put together an event, “Networking for a Cause: An Evening for Joseph,” to raise the last few funds needed to bring their son Joseph home to Des Moines. The event will take place on Thursday, April 14 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Badowers on Ingersoll Avenue. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door.

But keep in mind, this isn’t your typical networking event. Of course there will be drinks, entertainment, hors d’oeuvres and great people to mingle with, but this event is driven by a cause and directly supports Kayla, Jonny and Joseph in their journey of starting their new family in Des Moines. If you cannot attend the event but you’d still like to donate, you may do so by visiting Kayla and Jonny’s website.

“We were looking to give something to the community and to also raise a few funds to go towards Joseph’s fees,” said Craig. “We are hoping to have professionals come out to support the event. We have some really cool things planned, the silent auction items are great and we’ll even have some chair massages and music. It’s been really great to see people in the community, people that we don’t even know, coming together to be generous without an agenda.”

“Tapas at Trostel’s” to offer great deals, delicious food and casual socializing

After living in Spain for nearly 5 months, I became a huge fan tapas (and white wine for that matter). Tapas, which are small portions of dishes packed with flavor and a variety of tastes, textures and seasonings, can be found all around the globe…even in Des Moines!

I recently discovered Trosel’s Dish, a local tapas-style restaurant located at 12851 University Avenue, which offers a tapas menu that changes seasonally and features American, Asian, Latin, and Mediterranean dishes, as well as cracker crust pizzas, antipasto flights and even dessert.

I quickly fell in love with this local establishment after I tried their crispy fried avocado, which is a lightly breaded, fried avocado, pico de gallo, jalapeño sour cream and cilantro mayo. So, of course, I decided to try another menu item – Arancici, which are creamy risotto balls filled with risotto, sun-dried tomatoes, basil and mozzarella cheese and served with an arrabbiatta dipping sauce. To me, both dishes were nothing short of amazing. They reminded me of living in Spain and the culture behind tapas.

Part of the reason why I enjoy Trostel’s Dish is because of the dining experience it offers. It gives me the ability to share the culture behind tapas with friends. In Spain tapas are served in nearly every bar and restaurant and they are a huge part of the culture and social scene. Tapas are made to be shared and to encourage conversation – because the portions aren’t large, people tend to pay more attention to the people around them instead of what’s in front of them.

This thought sparked an idea…why not create an event at Trostel’s Dish for others to enjoy the “tapa experience” and to socialize? It was clear to me that hosting a social event called, “Tapas at Trostel’s,” to encourage local Des Moinesian’s to enjoy this Spanish tradition was what I wanted to do.

So, I’m happy to announce that “Tapas at Trostel’s” will be held on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Trostel’s Dish. Trostel’s Dish is sponsoring the event by offering all those who attend the event some great deals! Attendee’s will enjoy ½ price drinks, free food (a smorgasbord of tasty tapas, while supplies last), coupons for lunch and there will even be a gift card giveaway! Stay tuned to find out more about how you can get your hands on a FREE $20 gift card to Trostel’s Dish.

Please RSVP! If you’re planning on attending the event, please RSVP via the Facebook invite by searching “Tapas at Trostel’s.” Since there will be free food involved, we’d like to have a head count of the number of people who are planning on attending.

Connect with young professionals at YPC’s annual “Kick Off Party”

Young Professionals Connection (YPC) is hosting their annual “Kick Off Party” on Friday, January 28 starting at 5:00 p.m. at People’s (216 Court Ave – 3rd Floor, Des Moines, IA). The event will include free food from AK’s and Fong’s Pizza as well as giveaways, live music, drink specials and a chance to meet other young professionals in the Des Moines community.

If you’re not a member of YPC don’t worry – you don’t have to be a member of YPC to attend this event. YPC’s 2011 president, Jason Wells, is encouraging anyone who loves Des Moines or who wants to have a great time to stop by the “Kick Off Party.”

“Young professionals should attend the YPC ’Kick Off Party’ because they want to have fun!” said Wells. “It sounds cliché, but it’s the truth. Even if someone doesn’t have time to dedicate to YPC, why not just come celebrate everything we love about Des Moines, eat some good food and maybe win some prizes while you’re at it?”

At 7:30 p.m. the event will move over to the smaller area of People’s where attendee’s have the opportunity to enjoy the local piano talent of Tony Bohnenkamp. It’s even rumored that Wells will shave his head if 300 people attend the event…

If you’d like to learn more about YPC, visit their website, like them on Facebook, follow them on twitter and/or check out their new “Why I YPC” video.

YPC’s Mission: “To promote an environment that attracts and retains young professionals in Greater Des Moines. Our efforts focus on connecting young professionals to each other and to the community through social, civic, charitable, and professional development endeavors.”

Second GuacUp: recap and event photos!

The second GuacUp was a success and over 80 Des Moinesian’s, guac lovers, and social media guru’s alike showed up to gather, share guacamole, have a few drinks and enjoy some time networking with each other. And needless-to-say, the night was filled with tons of guacamole-themed phrases such as: “guac on,” “guacstar” and “guac n’ roll.”

Thank you to everyone who attended the event! A special thanks goes to Dos Rios for hosting the event and providing a few drink specials, Urban515 for providing Urban Card owners with a 20% off deal at Dos Rios and to Dwolla for setting up payments through Dwolla for the evening.

The Iowa Chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA Iowa) and the Social Media Club of Des Moines (SMCDSM) are co-sponsoring a unique event for a cause on January 13, 2011 called, “Post-Holiday Cheer (and Beer!).” The event will be held from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. at Mickey’s Irish Pub located at 1800 NW 86th in Clive.

Join these two great Des Moines organizations to get a dose of networking with area professionals, for an opportunity to win some great prizes, and to support a local charity “MovetheFood,” which is an emergency food pantry network operated by the Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC).

Attendees are asked to bring either a $5.00 donation or 3 non-perishable food items to the event to benefit “MovetheFood.”

“This is a great opportunity to mingle and network with area professionals,” said Laurie DePhillips, Vice President of Membership with AMA Iowa. “You never know when a connection you make at a networking event can turn into a great opportunity. Plus, it is for a great cause and we have a TON of awesome door prizes to give away.”

The Dish on Networking: YPC’s “Media Madness”

Last Thursday Young Professionals Connection (YPC) hosted yet another great networking opportunity, this time in the form of a Lunch and Learn at the Greater Des Moines Partnership entitled “Media Madness.”

The event featured local media professionals, Todd Razor with the Business Record, Colleen Kelly with STAR 102.5’s Big Ken and Colleen in the Morning, Brianne Sanchez with DMJuice.com and Dave Price with WHOTV Channel 13.

The panelists, who have diverse backgrounds in print, radio, web and TV, shared with the 40 + attendees how they became connected to Des Moines and to the media industry, they gave advice on how to connect with other media professionals in the Des Moines area and shared their perspectives on how the internet and social networking sites have changed they way they do their jobs. It was interesting to me to hear the experiences of the panelists on how technology has and is changing the face of journalism and news programming.

If you missed the event, or you’d like a little refresher, here are a few of my favorite quotes/advice from the panelists:

  • “Ask about the production schedule for their publication. At Juice we plan four weeks in advance.” – Brianne Sanchez
  • “Observe, listen and ask follow up questions.” – Colleen Kelly
  • “I’m not a publicist, I’m a journalist. The bigger part of my job is cutting through all of the noise.” – Todd Razor
  • “Don’t send a press release about a meeting you had last week. There’s no way we are going to use that.” – Dave Price
  • “The more you know about us, the better position you’ll be in.” – Todd Razor
  • In regards to sending press releases: “Don’t put ‘for immediate release’ in subject line.” – Brianne Sanchez
  • “It helps if you can make what you want to promote more appealing to a mass audience. It has to be a win-win for everyone involved. Find the angle and be able to sell it to us.” – Colleen Kelly
  • “Know who your sources are and use them.” – Todd Razor
  • “It’s all about developing a relationship.” – Colleen Kelly
  • “If you can stay persistent, you’ll be much better off.” – Dave Price
  • “I’m a big social networking guy. I use it to build relationships and to get story ideas.” – Todd Razor
  • “Social media is so rewarding because you get that two-way feedback, but it comes with the good and the bad.” – Dave Price
  • “You have to be unique and you have to be willing to take risks. People are going to love you or hate you.” – Colleen Kelly

Also, you can view a few pictures of the panelists and attendees from “Media Madness” on YPC’s website.

Make sure that you check out the next YPC networking event, “YPC Morning Meet-up,” on August 4, to network with young professionals and to learn more about Impromptu Studios, a coworking community in downtown Des Moines!
